Istanbul Sabiha Gökçen Airport (IATA: SAW, ICAO: LTFJ) is the second largest airport serving the city of Istanbul, Turkey. The main airport serving Istanbul is Atatürk Airport. Sabiha Gökçen Airport is located 35 km southeast of Istanbul, Turkey, on the Asian side of the city.


Istanbul Sabiha Gökçen airport serves as a hub for Pegasus Airlines and it’s an important base for Turkish Airlines and Borajet. In 2010 received an award to be voted as the World's Best Airport at the World Low Cost Airlines Congress.

In 2015 Sabiha Gökçen Airport handled 28,112,438 passengers, 5 million passengers more than the previous year, in 2014. This figure means an increment of 20% in terms of passengers and since 2005 this numbers have been growing. The airport is honored with Airport Traffic Growth Award by Airline News & Network Analysis.

Terminal

Sabiha Gökçen Airport is the 2nd one in importance serving Istanbul city, after Istanbul Atatürk airport. SAW airport has a new Main Terminal which serves International and Domestic passengers. The terminal has a capacity to handle 25 million travelers annually.

 

The new terminal has 112 check-in counters, a parking with 4 levels with a capacity of over 4,700 vehicles and 70 buses. Sabiha Gökçen Airport also has an adjacent hotel with 128 rooms.

 

The terminal is divided in two floors:

- Departures floor: It has gates from 201A/B to 208A/B. And also communicates directly with gates from 307 to 313. There are some restaurants and shops before and after the security control. ATM’s are at the building as well.

- Arrivals floor: It has gates from 201 to 208. It has ATM’s outside the security control area. There is a Duty Free shop and also some smallest shops. It also has a conference hall and the terminal communicates directly to some parking lots to pick up passengers.  

 

Facilities and Services

The Terminal provides the following services: Pharmacy, Ticket Sale Offices, Banks (Türkiye İş Bank and Yapı Kredi Bank), Rental Car offices, Duty-free area, Shops, Cafes and Restaurants, Hairdresser, Flower Shop, etc.

SAW airport has Attendant Staff for all travelers with special needs. Wheelchairs, Lavatories, Cash Machines, Parking places, Inter-airport service vehicles and phones are also available for all passengers.

Transport

- Metro: Take a taxi or a bus to go to Kartal metro station. It’s planned to extend Line M4 to arrive to SAW airport directly.

 

- Shuttle Bus: From Sabiha Gökçen Airport departs shuttle buses which serves Taksim and Kadikoy areas.

 

- Bus: several bus routes connect the airport to different destinations.

 

- Taxi: You can pick up a Taxicab as a transportation to go to Istanbul city or surroundings.

 

- Train / Rail: Sabiha Gökçen Airport is connected with Pendik’s railway station, about 14 km far away. You can pick up a taxi or a sea-taxi to go to the railway station. During next years it’s planned to build a new connection with the rail transportation project Marmaray.

Currently Haydarpaşa-Pendik-Haydarpaşa trains are stopped for a 24 month period. Check the official website of the railway to make sure that the service is available.
